Pet Wellness Exams

Veterinary Wellness Center of Boerum Hill believes that prevention and early diagnosis are the keys to a happy pet. Our veterinarians recommend bringing your pet in for wellness exams regularly to ensure we can keep them healthy and well.

Wellness exams include a physical inspection of your pet from nose to tail. We start by weighing and measuring your pet to check for obesity, which is just as important for pets as it is for humans. If your pet is overweight, we will provide guidance on nutrition, activity and weight loss.

From there, our veterinarian will check your pet’s skin, coat, and ears and look for fleas, ticks and other parasites including ear mites. We will also peer inside your pet’s mouth and look at their teeth, gums, and tongue to see if they are suffering from swelling, sore spots or redness. Bad breath is also a good indicator of infection, so if their breath is particularly foul this may be a sign of a more generalized infection.

For the Pups and the Kittens

It’s best to schedule a first wellness exam for new puppies and kittens when they are between eight and 12 weeks old. After your pet’s first birthday, we suggest we see them at least once a year until they become a senior pet, which is when they turn seven. Senior pets should be seen twice a year, due to their old age and their increased risk of disease.
