Dog Vaccines in Brooklyn, New York
Just like people, dogs can catch serious but preventable diseases. Some of these diseases can be fatal, or even transmittable to humans. Luckily, there are vaccinations for a number of these dangerous viruses, and we at Veterinary Wellness Center of Boerum Hill can provide an expert veterinarian to advise you about your dog's vaccination needs.
Core Dog Vaccines
There are six to eight viruses that make up three core vaccines for dogs. One core shot covers four to six illnesses, and is often referred to as a DHPP vaccine. Additional letters denote versions with additional protection. DHPP stands for:
- Hepatitis (also sometimes called Adenovirus)
The rabies vaccine is the one vaccination that is mandated by law. This is because rabies is a zoonosis, or a virus that can be spread between animals and people. It is fatal to both. In New York City, the law requires that this vaccination be given by a veterinarian when your pup is no more than three months old.
Vaccination against bordatella, a common cause of kennel cough, is the final core vaccine recommended. It is different from other shots in that it may be given either as an injection or a nasal spray. Your vet here at Veterinary Wellness Center of Boerum Hill can advise you about which version is best for your dog.
Keep Your Dog's Vaccines Up to Date
Starting in puppyhood, your dog's vaccinations protect him or her from deadly diseases. However, booster shots are required in order to maintain immunity. Rabies vaccination boosters are mandatory, and occur at either one or three year intervals, depending on the type of vaccine.
DHPP shots are usually given every 3-4 weeks from approximately seven weeks of age until at least 16 weeks of age. Boosters are then given every one to three years. Bordatella vaccines are usually given every six months or yearly.
